Mr. Fred Spilhaus has served as Executive Director of the American Geophysical Union since 1970. AGU is an international scientific society of over 40,000 scientists engaged in research in the Earth and space sciences that among other activities publishes or co-publishes 13 scientific journals and a weekly newspaper.
Spilhaus, an oceanographer with a Ph.D. from MIT, has been president of the Association of Earth Science Editors, the Cosmos Club of Washington DC and the Council of Engineering and Scientific Society Executives. He was one of the founders of the Society for Scholarly Publishing, has served twice on the Executive Council of the Professional and Scholarly Publishing division of the Association of American Publishers and has chaired the Publishing Policy Committee of the American Institute of Physics. He currently sits on the governing bodies of the American Institute of Physics and the American Geological Institute.
