New York (August 13, 2020) – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Hayward D. Fisk, Chairman & President of the Atlantic Legal Foundation, is pleased to announce that Lawrence S. Ebner has been elected by its Board of Directors to serve as the Foundation’s Senior Vice President & General Counsel. Mr. Ebner will be responsible for all aspects of the Foundation’s nationally renowned amicus curiae (“friend of the court”) program. Through its amicus program, Atlantic Legal advocates for individual liberty, free enterprise, property rights, limited and efficient government, sound science in the courtroom, and school choice in carefully selected cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, and in federal courts of appeals and state appellate courts throughout the United States.
“The Atlantic Legal Foundation is delighted that a skilled and experienced appellate advocate of Larry Ebner’s caliber will be leading the Foundation’s amicus program, including by authoring our amicus briefs,” Mr. Fisk said. He added that “Marty Kaufman, who has commendably served the Foundation by implementing and overseeing the amicus program for more than 30 years, will continue as Executive Vice President in an advisory capacity.”
Although serving the Atlantic Legal Foundation will be his primary role, Mr. Ebner will continue his independent, nationwide, appellate litigation practice, and advise and represent new and existing clients, at Capital Appellate Advocacy PLLC, the Washington, D.C.-based boutique law firm that he founded in 2016. He also will continue his volunteer leadership roles with DRI – The Voice of the Defense Bar, where he serves as Immediate Past Chair of the DRI Amicus Committee and a Vice-Chair of the DRI’s Center for Law and Public Policy.
Mr. Ebner is an accomplished appellate litigation specialist who has decades of experience authoring Supreme Court amicus briefs, as well as strategizing and handling appeals. He has been inducted as a fellow of the highly selective American Academy of Appellate Lawyers, and writes and speaks extensively on appellate litigation. He has practiced law for almost half a century in Washington, D.C.
Following graduation from Dartmouth College and Harvard Law School, he began his legal career as an Honors Program attorney in the Civil Division of the U.S. Department of Justice. Mr. Ebner then devoted more than four decades to a continually expanding, now global law firm, where he established and led the appellate practice group. To serve clients in a more personalized, cost-effective manner, he departed “Big Law” in 2016 to launch his own solo-practice firm.
“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with the Atlantic Legal Foundation,” Mr. Ebner said. “I look forward to advancing the Foundation’s important mission through the filing of amicus briefs in key Supreme Court and other appellate cases.”
