Lee Barrett - Director, Atlantic Legal Foundation and President & CEO of Nisus Corporation

Lee Barrett is the president and CEO of Nisus Corporation, an American-owned chemical manufacturer based in Rockford, Tennessee that specializes in sustainable solutions for pest control, industrial and commercial wood protection, and agricultural micronutrients. He is a board member of the National Pest Management Association (NPMA), the non-profit dedicated to addressing the technical, governmental, educational, and business needs of the pest control industry. He is also a board member of UPFDA (the United Producers, Formulators, and Distributors Association). UPFDA represents suppliers in the pest control industry, providing support for logistical, legislative, and regulatory affairs.

Mr. Barrett has worked in the closely connected pest control and wood protection industries for 35 years, ever since he got his start in the mailroom at US Borax. Today, he is a leading advocate for sustainable science in chemical manufacturing.

Lee was raised in the Los Angeles area and holds a degree from the University of Montana. Lee’s business career began at US Borax, the world’s largest boron-based products company at the time, where he quickly moved into leadership positions. From the start, his leadership style motivated those around him to push through challenges and to excel. He continued to advance at US Borax until he was leading business development for several channels, including key industrial accounts and ultimately their Tim‑bor borate product in pest control, where he developed an untapped market for novel termite control products.

When Nisus Corporation purchased the sales and marketing rights to Tim-bor in 1999, Lee joined them as their Western Regional Manager. From there, he moved into national business development, working closely with home builders and serving as an educational resource in the region for the role of borates in pest control and wood protection. A few years later, Lee and his wife, Wendy, moved from Riverside, CA to Knoxville, TN, with their two daughters when he was promoted to Divisional Vice President of Domestic and International Pest Control. At the end of 2021, Lee was appointed president and CEO of Nisus, where he is responsible for all divisions of the company, including Industrial Wood Preservation and Agriculture, in addition to Pest Control.

During his tenure as president, Lee has moved the already-successful company into a new era of growth and industry recognition. Nisus was recently admitted into the American Chemistry Council Responsible Care program, an intensive program which focuses on product stewardship, reduction in product liability, worker safety, and environmental care. The program is voluntary, and Nisus is one of the few chemical manufacturers with less than 500 employees to be admitted. Through strong science, under Lee’s tenure as president and CEO, Nisus today is one of the world’s leading producers of borate-based products.

Besides his role as president and CEO of Nisus, Lee was also elected to board of directors of the industry trade group of Nisus commercial pest management companies, the National Pest Management Association. Lee served as a member of the board of directors of the United Producers and Distributors Association, a trade group of specialty chemical manufacturers. Lee is also active in government affairs policy development with a strong philosophy of supporting reasonable but limited government oversight. He also champions sustainable science in chemical manufacturing. To that end, Nisus scientists have a strong presence interacting with government agencies to act as watchdogs of sound science and reasonable regulatory oversight. Lee sees a bright future for industry in this country and endeavors to promote that belief in American ingenuity and success.
