Atlantic Legal Publishes Updated Guide for California Charter Schools

ATLANTIC LEGAL PUBLISHES UPDATED GUIDE FOR CALIFORNIA CHARTER SCHOOLS

HARRISON, NY (September 22, 2017) Atlantic Legal Foundation, a non-partisan, tax exempt, public interest legal foundation has announced the publication of Leveling the Playing Field, third edition, an updated guide for charter school operators in California and throughout the country on labor-management law and practice for charter school leaders. The guide has been written by David S. Allen and Thomas V. Walsh, Principals at Jackson Lewis P.C., one of the country’s preeminent employment law firms, with a Preface by the President and C.E.O. of the California Charter Schools Association, and a Forward by Atlantic Legal’s Chairman and President.

The goal is to present a “plain English” overview of state and federal labor laws as they relate to charter schools, with a particular focus on union organizing and collective bargaining. The new edition is especially relevant as the National Labor Relations Board in state after state has begun to assert applicability of federal labor law, not state public employee statutes, to charter schools.  These federal rules, unfamiliar to most charter school leaders, combined with unions’ renewed attempts to organize the charter school teaching staffs, makes this book a must-read for charter school operators who must adapt to the changing regulatory environment. Leveling discusses the meaning, purpose and effect of the National Labor Relations Act and also provides charter schools with basic principles and techniques to avoid legal issues and to respond to union organizing efforts, while proactively enhancing labor relations.

The Atlantic Legal Foundation’s guide is an indispensable resource for trustees and administrators of charter schools. To get your copy, please contact Hayward D. Fisk, Chairman and President of the Foundation, at hdanfisk@atlanticlegal.org, or Lawrence S. Ebner, Executive Vice President and General Counsel of the Foundation, at lawrence.ebner@atlanticlegal.org.

About the Atlantic Legal Foundation

The Atlantic Legal Foundation, a non-profit, tax exempt, public interest legal foundation established more than 40 years ago, has been proud to represent charter school advocates and to promote innovative programs leading to academic success. Through Leveling, Atlantic Legal’s Charter School Advocacy Program offers advice that is not always available from corporate or not-for-profit attorneys who often are not skilled in labor law matters. Labor law is highly technical, and charter school boards and administrators are well advised to seek counsel from firms with expertise in this area. For more information, you can view the Foundation’s website at www.atlanticlegal.org or contact Hayward D. Fisk at hdanfisk@atlanticlegal.org, or lawrence.ebner@atlanticlegal.org.
